Michael “Popcorn” A. Saxton, 41, of Belvidere, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on February 14, 2026, following a courageous four-year battle with cancer. Michael was born on August 18, 1984, in Rockford to James and Josephine (Loven) Saxton.
Michael was a lifelong learner who valued education and personal growth. He graduated from Boylan Catholic High School and later from Rockford University.
On June 27, 2020, Michael married the love of his life, Sarah Matherly, at Arrowhead Campground. Introduced by mutual friends, their relationship quickly grew into a partnership filled with laughter, love, and unwavering support. Though married for five years, they shared eight meaningful years together.
Michael had a deep love for sports and found joy in coaching girls’ softball, where he encouraged teamwork, confidence, and fun. He also loved golfing and spending time outdoors. Camping was especially meaningful to him — a chance to slow down and enjoy life with family and friends. Around the campfire, playing bags, sharing stories, and enjoying nature were some of the moments he treasured most.
Above all else, Michael loved his family. Time spent with them, especially with his granddaughter, brought him his greatest happiness. Known for his kindness, warmth, and caring spirit, Michael had a way of making people feel welcome and valued. His strength, humor, and love will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew him.
The family would like to give special thanks to Northern Illinois Hospice, UW Cancer Research Centers, and his family and friends who supported him along the way.
Survived by his wife, Sarah Saxton; children, Samantha, Danielle, Caiden, and Christian; granddaughter, Xara; mother, Josephine Saxton; brother, Joseph (Quianna) Saxton; many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his father, James Saxton, and both his paternal and maternal grandparents.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, February 20th, 2026, at Honquest Family Funeral Home – Mulford Chapel, 4311 N. Mulford Rd. Loves Park, IL, 61111, at 7:00 pm, with a memorial visitation starting at 5:00 PM until the time of service.
